Differences Between Meiosis and Mitosis

Dear Past Neal,

Hi Neal its Neal writing to help you understand the differences between meiosis and mitosis. First of all you need to know that in both processes the cell starts as a diploid cell containing 100% of its DNA. Also you should know that meiosis has two parts and mitosis has only one. Another idea you will need is that during metaphase I chromosome pairs line up in the center of the cell so that they may be split in anaphase not chromatid pairs like in mitosis. Also one final idea you will need to know is that since meiosis has two stages of division, you end up with two haploid cells with 50% of the needed DNA.

The comparison on the PBS website was very helpful to get our notes on track about the differences between these two proceses. I suggest that you study this in advance so that you will be more prepared with the space needed to take notes and make comparisons.
